Direct BDS Admission – All You Need to Know

Planning to be a Dentist but not sure whether you can earn a seat through NEET counseling? Here is a detailed article that lets you know how you can earn Direct BDS Admission through Management Quota or NRI Quota.

Lots of students out there thinking that he/she will get BDS (Dental) admission without appearing or qualifying NEET-UG Exam, this is not their fault actually, this is due to lack of knowledge and improper guidance and articles all over the Internet.

Though some colleges offer Direct BDS Admission under Management Quota or NRI Quota, the prospective candidates must qualify NEET-UG Exam.

In order to Qualify NEET-UG Exam, you need to score about 50 percentile marks if you belong to General Category else 40 percentile if you are from ST/SC/OBC Category.

Once you qualify NEET-UG Exam, you need to attend or participate in the counseling conducted by the State Counseling Authority or MCC (Medical Counseling Committee) for Deemed Dental Colleges in India.

Brief about BDS (Dental) Course

After MBBS, BDS or Bachelor of Dental Surgery is one of the most sought after courses in the field of medical science

B.D.S or Bachelor of Dental Surgery is a five-year (4 years of study + 1 year Internship) undergraduate program and is the only recognized dental course in India.

Students will be taught subjects like Oral Pathology, Dental Hygiene, Dental Histology, Public Health Dentistry, etc., during the span of 5 years of the course.

Eligibility Criteria for BDS Course in India

In order to be eligible for BDS Course, you need to fulfill the following prerequisite criteria:

  • You must passed 10+2 or 12th Std. or equivalent exam with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks
  • You must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as compulsory subjects in 12th Std.
  • You must qualify NEET-UG Exam and need to appear for the counseling conducted by the authorities.

BDS Admission Procedure in India

Admissions to BDS Program in India are usually done through the NEET-UG Exam a national level entrance exam conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency) across the country.

From the academic year 2016-17, it has been compulsory to qualify NEET-UG Exam for admission in MBBS and BDS Courses.

In order to qualify NEET-UG Exam, you need to score a minimum of 50 percentile (For General Category) and 40 percentile (For ST/SC/OBC Category).

Even if you are trying to take Direct BDS Admission under Management Quota or NRI Quota seats in any particular Dental College or College located in other states you must have to qualify NEET-UG Exam.

After qualifying NEET-UG Exam, you need to attend counseling conducted by your State Government Authority (like KEA, DMER, etc.) and Central Government Authority (MCC – Medical Counseling Committee) which is compulsory.

Without attending to the counseling process, you’ll not eligible for BDS admission, even if you are seeking Direct BDS Admission through Management Quota or NRI Quota

Counseling Procedure for BDS Admission

After qualifying NEET-UG Exam, you need to attend the counseling process as well conducted by the state examination authority.

For every state there will be a separate counseling process, if you want to take BDS Admission in a different state you have to register and attend the counseling.

Some of the States in India required domicile to participate in the counseling process, which you should check while registering.

Even if you are trying to get Direct BDS Admission in any state through Management Quota or NRI Quota, you have to attend the counseling process conducted by the state.

Here are the following steps to be followed by you after qualifying NEET-UG Exam:

1. Registration for Counseling

After qualifying NEET-UG Exam, you have to register for the counseling process in your state or other states where you want admission, and you can also register for MCC (Medical Counseling Committee) if you want admission into deemed dental colleges.

2. Document Verification

After registrations, there will be document verification by the counseling conducting authority. It would be online or offline depending upon the basis of the current situation.

  • NEET-UG Score Card
  • Transfer Certificate (TC) or School Leaving Certificate (SLC)
  • Migration Certificate
  • Caste Certificate (If you applied under category students)
  • Income Certificate (If you applied for Scholarship)
  • Identity Proof (Aadhaar Card, DL, Passport, Voter ID, etc.)
  • Passport-size photo
  • Domicile Certificate (For some states only)

3. Counseling Round -1

Once you’ll be done with the document verification process you’ll be invited to fill your choice of college by login into the official website of the conducting authority, and you have to wait for the results.

If you got selected for any college then you need to report to the college with all necessary documents, else you can wait for the second round of the counseling process.

4. Counseling Round -2

This Counseling Round – 2 is the same as the first round of the counseling process. If selected you need to report to the college else wait for the further round of the counseling process which is called the mop-up round.

5. Mop-Up Round

The vacant seats after the second round of the counseling process will be allotted through the Mop-Up round. Usually, this process is done offline, but as per the current situation this year it may be done online.

6. Direct BDS Admission by the Colleges

The vacant or canceled seats in the colleges are allotted to students by the college itself in the offline mode in the ratio of 1:10.
