Admission in MBBS
“To be a doctor, then, means much more than to dispense pills, or patch up or repair torn flesh and shattered minds. To be a doctor, is to be an intermediary between man and God”
All around the world, the pursuit of being a doctor is considered prestigious, noble and highly intellectual. MBBS, which stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, is a professional undergraduate medical degree provided by the Universities in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and many other countries. To be a Doctor in India, means to be a part of one of the most honourable and respectful fraternities.
The MBBS Course in India is 4.5 years long, and has an additional 1 year of mandatory Internship, making it a total of 5.5 years until graduation. Despite it being an extremely lucrative career, being a doctor is a coveted position, and hence the path to being one is filled with challenges.
If you have an aptitude for science, a deep curiosity of learning about the human body, or a knack for picking up clues and coming up with an answer, you are absolutely cut out for this profession. In the early years of MBBS, one learns the structure and functioning of a normal human life at first and then proceeds to understanding the abnormalities. Right from the time of conception to death, every single detail of the working of life gets covered in this course. It is enlightening and humbling to be a Doctor, as people from all walks of life seek your advice and revere you for your knowledge.
MBBS Admission in India in 2023
a young doctor’s journey begins right after their school life. After passing the 12th board exams, one must prepare for State or Central entrance exams which is the key that unlocks the door to the incredible world of medicine. The eligibility to become a doctor in India is as follows
- The student must be an Indian National
- The student must complete their 10+2 exam with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (botany and zoology)
- Minimum 50% Marks in Senior Secondary Examination or Central Board of Secondary Education or its equivalent
- The student Should get a qualifying score on the NEET Exam.
- The student should complete the age of 17 years by the 31st of December of the year of admission
Earlier, all states had their own Medical Entrance Exams, but now it has been replaced by the NEET Exam (National Eligibility and Entrance Test).
For admission to an MBBS college, the marks and the rank obtained from this centralized exam are considered. Earlier, for colleges and universities such as aIIMS and JIPMER, there used to be a separate private entrance exam (aIIMS MBBS and JIPMER MBBS) but as of the 2020 academic year, all institutions run by the central government of India provide admission through the NEET Exam.
Competing for all India Quota (aIQ) seats as well as State Quota seats is possible through neet, hence, the odds of getting an MBBS seat become greater. With the NEET-UG score, one can secure admission in all government, private, deemed medical colleges and universities.
MBBS Admission Process in India in 2023
According to The Medical Council of India, which is the sole governing body of medical colleges and universities, as of 2020, India has 539 medical colleges that educate approximately 80,000 medical students.
There are 279 Government Medical colleges and 256 Private Medical Colleges out of the 260 colleges all over India. out of all the states, Tamil Nadu has the highest number of medical colleges in the whole country.
Tamil Nadu has 48 Medical colleges with 5500 medical seats, 3600 government seats and 1950 private seats, which is about 10% of the whole of India’s seat count.
after clearing NEET-UG, students appearing on the merit list have an upper hand in selecting what college they want, depending upon their position in the list.
There is a Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) which has been appointed to handle all admission processes for the MBBS course. Every College has 15% seats under the All India Quota (aIQ) Seats whose admission is secured under the MCC. The state Governments conduct their respective admission processes for the 85% State Quota seats.
The very first step in the counselling process of NEET-UG 2020 is the Registration process. If the candidate wishes to secure one of the 15% aIQ seats, they must go to the official website of MCC to commence their registration process and fill a form given over there. The student must pay the stipulated counselling fee, the payment of which is done online with the help of net banking or credit/debit cards.
The following is the counseling fee for different categories
- The fee for general category students applying for 15% aIQ seats is Rs. 1000/-
- The fee for reserved categories such as SC / ST / PwD / oBC is Rs. 500
- The fee for counselling to deemed universities, irrespective of reservation category is Rs. 5000
Once the registration for counselling is done, the student must start deciding their preferences and once the preferences are decided, the list is submitted via a form during the form filling rounds.
Hence, the MBBS admission of a student depends on two factors- their NEET-UG merit rank, as well as their own preferences of colleges which they provide during the counselling process.
There is no limit or cap on the number of choices a student can make, just the order of preferences must be selected very wisely according to their merit performance in order to successfully secure a seat. after providing their choices of college, the form gets locked so that the consideration process can take place for allotment.
Once the form filling process is completed all over the country, the seat allotment process begins through which the seats are declared on the official website. This usually takes a couple of months.
Multiple rounds (usually 3 ) of seat allotments take place so if the candidate has not secured a seat in the first round he can wait for the next round. a downloadable seat allotment letter is provided to each candidate on the official website.
After securing a seat, the candidate must report to the allotted university or college within the deadline given to complete the final process of admission. The admission will be confirmed only after reporting and submission of mandatory documents.
